About Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary 🌿

Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) is a 32,000-acre conservation project located on the edge of the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the largest protected areas in Cambodia. Just an hour and a half north of Angkor Wat, this vast jungle is home to endangered species including giant ibis, banteng, Eld’s deer, sarus crane, monkeys, gibbons, and several turtle species.

Once teeming with life, this region has faced decades of destruction from illegal logging and poaching. Our mission is to reverse that — to protect and restore what remains, and to rebuild a thriving ecosystem where animals and forests can flourish together again.

At CWS, we provide a safe, natural home for rescued elephants who are free to roam and forage throughout the jungle during the day. Two of our long-term residents, Di-Ploh and Sarai Mia, have lived here for several years, enjoying freedom and care in an environment that puts their well-being first.

In 2020, the world watched as Kaavan — once dubbed “the world’s loneliest elephant” — was rescued from captivity in Pakistan and brought to CWS. Today, Kaavan lives peacefully at our sanctuary, exploring his jungle home, bathing in natural pools, and rediscovering his elephant nature.

CWS is more than a wildlife sanctuary. It’s a movement to restore balance, protect Cambodia’s rich biodiversity, and empower local communities to be part of the solution. Every tree planted, every animal saved, and every volunteer welcomed is a step toward a better future — one rooted in respect, compassion, and shared responsibility.

With your support, we continue to protect this land and all the lives that depend on it. Thank you for being part of our mission.
